Going off to college can be a stressful time. It’s completely different from high school with greater freedom, living away from home, and getting to choose your classes. I’m here to tell you about the greatest method of getting to all of your classes on time: the longboard.
Longboards are perfect for college as they are faster and funner than walking. They can also easily be stored inside of classrooms or carried with you when you walk through the halls of a building.
The problem is that there are longboards that are great for skaters but terrible for college. In this article, I explain what makes a longboard one of the best longboards for college and what kind of longboards you should be looking for.

What kind of Longboard do I need for College?
College involves a lot of short distance walks between different buildings in between class. You can also expect that there will be a large amount of other people walking around.
The best longboards for college feature a short deck length and trucks specially designed for maneuverability. This combination allows you to easily swerve and get around people while also allowing you to pick up speed quickly.
Another advantage to the shorter deck is the lighter weight. While you will be able to skate between buildings, once you get inside you almost always have to pick up your board and carry it. For this reason alone, I can’t ride my downhill boards to and from class. They’re simply too heavy to carry around comfortably for periods of time.
If you are looking for longboards for college, you want longboards classified as commuters or cruisers. These boards are often cheap and will fit your needs perfectly.

Penny Nickel

Measuring on 27” inch long, the Penny Nickel features a lightweight and short deck that makes it perfect for students in college. The deck is made out of polyurethane making this board durable enough for anything that you can throw at it.
This longboard is most popular among college students because of its size. With only a 27” inch deck, students can easily carry this around without making it blatantly obvious that they have a longboard in their hand.
The shorter wheelbase + kicktail combination also allows the Penny Nickel to make the tightest turns around campus look easy. Combined with a cheap price, this belongs at the #1 spot on my picks for best college longboards.
Sector 9 83’ Complete Skateboard

A cheaper alternative to the Penny Board or the Landyachtz Dinghy, Sector 9 brings us their version of a commuter mini cruiser longboard in the shape of the Sector 9 83’ complete. With a classic pintail design with a kicktail, this board has the maneuverability necessary to weave between pedestrians and get you to class on time.
The deck is made out of 7 ply cold pressed maple resulting in a stiff deck underneath your feet. The board comes with 7” Mission Trucks and 58mm Nineball wheels to make the ride feel smooth underneath you.
As it’s a smaller board, this probably shouldn’t be your first longboard because it can be a touch harder to control than a longer board.

Landyachtz produces cheap and high-quality longboards for all types of skaters. One of their lesser known longboards, the Landyachtz Ripple Ridge is another one of my top picks for best longboards for college because of it’s versatility and build quality.
Landyachtz designed this longboard especially for city free riding in mind and it shows in the board design. The deck measures 33.75” inches from end to end and it features a wide deck to allow for different foot positions on the board.
As a commuting board, the Landyachtz Ripple ridge also features pocketed nose and tail kicks which allow you to easily perform tricks or do an ollie to get over a curb. It comes with Polar Bear Trucks to ensure that it can carve easily and long lasting Hawgs wheels.

Another longboard from Landyachtz, the Landyachtz Dinghy is a high-quality mini cruiser that will fit your needs perfectly in college. The deck measures only 28.5” (only 1 inch bigger than the Penny Nickel) making this longboard easily portable and lightweight.
I like to think of this board as a variant of the Penny Nickel designed for more than purely city cruising. The Landyachtz Dinghy excels at cruising around but it is also a full longboard capable of taking out for daily skate sessions.
